Social change refers to the basic alteration, over time, in the behavior patterns, cultures, and structures of society. However, not all changes are a social change, for instance, the socialization we experience as children created a profound effect on our personal lives, but it does not alter the basic organization of the family, and, there, is a not social change. On the other hand, the creation of communal child-care center in Israeli Kibbutzim, where the young are housed and thought, constitutes a major social change in that country. During the industrial revolution, the introduction of various inventions changed not only the work patterns of people; it al so created changes in occupational and life structures.

The introduction of the technology may turn farmers into factory workers. This happened to the American farmers during the first industrial revolution which brought changes in production methods. However, during the current second industrial revolution central to development is the restructuring of society from an industrial to an information technology.
